Safe Work Australia this week released a new report every workplace owner or health and safety officer should be across.
Key Work Health and Safety Statistics Australia 2024 tracks at-work injuries and shows 80% of serious claims are related to body stress or slips and trips.
The report goes on to detail more than 1,800 traumatic injury fatalities in Australian workplaces over the past ten years. If that weren’t tragic enough, over a million workers have made a serious workers’ compensation claim, most of which were for more than a week.
In the last financial year, over 30,000 claims were made leading to a loss of nearly nine weeks productivity and an average $16,000 compensation.
The number of deaths due to falls also increased in 2023, becoming the second highest contributor to worker fatalities. Nearly 200 workers died from traumatic injuries many of which could have been prevented.
Serious claims included injuries to joints/ligaments, wounds, fractures, burns, nerve and intracranial injuries. Many of those could have been avoidable with a few simple changes to the workplace.
